This opening is in the dining room just south of the staircase where the removed wall was located. There was a cold air return high on the wall, which left a hole in the flooring. You can see the diagonal piece of metal between the floor joists which directed air from the wall down into the return duct below the floor.

I found an error when I opened up this section. The cold air return metal piece for another channel was installed between the wrong floor joists - it was drawing air from the basement instead of the main floor. Andrew moved the diagonal metal duct to the correct joist opening.
