One of the "features" of this house was a deep kitchen window, probably for plants. However, a foolish design flaw, as I noted in the home page, is that one needed to literally crawl onto the kitchen counter to operate the internal blinds or open/close the window. With the prevailing westerlies winds and evening sun, window and blinds management is important. Originally, I was going to install the new window at the depth of the soffit, offering a sill roughly 12" deep. However, the construction complexity simply wasn't worth the benefit. So, we mounted it flush to the outside. This will allow for a 5" or 6" deep sill. The new window lets in much more light and offers a much better view. In mid-April we received the new windows for the bathroom, laundry room, and old office area. The siding around the kitchen window will be completed when the new bathroom window has been installed because they are next each other and will share some siding pieces. |
